Two Harbors

No, this photo isn't stretched. This is the Budd Car, also referred to as an RDC (rail deisel car), owned and operated by the North Shore Scenic Railroad in Duluth. This car is a self-contained mini train. I has its own deisel engine, facilities and passenger area. It is pictured here at the the north end of the line at the station in Two Harbors, MN. It was a pretty decent ride, but a little slower than I like to go on a train.

This Mallet 2-8-8-4 of the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range was a principal and typical tractive unit for ore transportation in the region. #229 was saved from the scrap heap and restored to original splendor. Two Harbors is it's final resting place, where it is doubtful it will ever belch smoke again.

Update: I returned to Two Harbors in 2010 to visit #229 to see how well she was preserved. I was very disappointed in her present condition. She is rusting and is woefully neglected. I chose not to take any photos. I will go back again in a couple of years and look at her again.
